The Period of the Five Dynasties was an unstable and brutal interlude in Chinese history.
A short lived and brutal dynasty, Modi murdered his father only to be overthrown by the son of a Turkish general Tang Zhuangzong.
During the tumult of this period the Tang civilization was kept alive amongst the southern ten kingdoms, especially Sichuan.

| Modi | 911-923 |
Despite managing to keep the northern provinces fairly united the Later Tang dynasty was a poor imitation of its greater namesake and was soon swept away by another Turkish General Gaozu.
| Zhuangzong | 923-926 |
| Mingzong | 926-934 |
| Feidi | 934-935 |
The Later Jin dynasty was another short lived and ineffectual period with loss of some land to imperial control.
| Gaozu | 936-948 |
| Chudi | 944-947 |
The second Gaozu established a dynasty with no better luck.
| Gaozu | 947-948 |

At last the period of disunity ended with the powerful Zhou family taking the throne and quickly losing it again.
