A little like 'tar'

Another egalitarian feature of Chinese culture is the lack of gender specific notions. In oral Chinese there is no distinction between he, she or it, you have to work it out from the context. However, the written form is different. The pictogram for the gender neutral form contains the prefix element for person (ren) together with the character for also, presenting clearly the idea of 'the other person'.

yǒu jiǔ bǎi běn shū
ta : he you : have; possess jiu : 9; nine bai : 100; hundred ben : root; book shu : book
he has nine hundred [of] books
