Meishan is associated with the three Sus : Suxun; Sushi (Su Dongpo) and Suzhe, who are known as the three great father-and-son writers in one family and these three were among the eight greatest poets of the Tang and Song Dynasties.

Since the Tang Dynasty, poets, scholars and other talented people have come from Meishan. During 317 years of the North Song Dynasty, more than 880 Imperial candidate graduates appeared in Meishan.
