Tibet (Xizang to the Chinese) is the most familiar province of China to foreigners, it is known for its high mountains and cold climate. On the southern border with India is the high Himalayas including Mount Everest (Qumolangma Fang in Chinese).

Many tourists flock to see the ancient Tibetan buildings at Lhasa and Shigatse.

Tibet used to be an independent nation and has a distinct culture of its own. It's current position as an autonomous province is disputed by some as there are historical arguments as to whether Tibet has been an independent state or a vassal state over the last five hundred years. It is undeniable that the Chinese have poured in resources to develop this important frontier province.
