SUMMARY:Understanding SACU - SACU ChinaChat online
DESCRIPTION:The atmosphere within which SACU seeks to promote understanding of China has deteriorated considerably in the last two or three years. How do we find our bearings during such uncertain and unpredictable times?   In SACU we know we have much to learn from China\, and the Chinese approach of learning from history in order to understand the present and shape the future. In line with this idea\, SACU Vice President Jenny Clegg – whose membership of SACU reaches back to the mid-1960s – will look at the trajectory of UK-China people’s relations across this time period and even further. DESCRIPTION:We will continue to discuss the writings of Ding Ling 丁玲 based on two short stories\, “Shanghai\, Spring 1930 – Part 2” and “When I was in Xia Village” (1940) at our next group meeting. \nDing Ling made the transition from writing about self-indulgent bourgeois women to one who observed at close hand the life of working people\, particularly the peasants in the countryside. DESCRIPTION:SACU Reading Group on May Fourth Writers and their writing – Led by Michael Sheringham (SACU) \nWe have been meeting online to discuss Chinese literature of the May Fourth period – roughly from the beginning of the 1920s to the end of the ‘30s – for the past 8 months. We are a small group meeting once a month to discuss stories and poems by well-known writers of the period\, including Lu Xun\, Mao Dun\, Bing Xin\, Guo Moruo\, Lin Shuhua\, Ding Ling\, Xiao Hong\, Xiao Jun and Yu Dafu – well-known in China\, but not so much overseas even among those interested in China and its cultural tradition. \nSACU members are welcome to join any meeting – we usually meet online at 6.00-7.30 pm on Wednesday mid-month. \nFor more information email: membership@sacu.org.uk

SUMMARY:SACU-Peking University Essay/Art Competition 2020-2021 Online Awards Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:All SACU members are welcome to join with the students from both the UK and China for this year’s Awards Ceremony of the Essay/Art Competition\, organised jointly by SACU and Peking University. \nThe SACU/ Peking University Essay Competition began in 2015 as part of SACU’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. Now in its 5th year\, the aim of the competition is to help young people learn about the development of friendship and understanding between the UK and China and to consider how this might be further promoted. The submissions could be an essay or an artistic form\, which could involve for example photography\, other visual art\, or choreographed dance. \nThe awards are sponsored by Peking University with three prizes of £100 / £50 /£25 in each of two categories. \n\nThe judging panel is chaired by Dr. Frances Wood\, renowned author on China and former head of the British Library Chinese Collections and SACU Vice President\, who will give the panel’s views on the entries.\nProfessor Sun Hua of Peking University will join from Beijing. Prof Sun Hua is an expert in historical figures who have contributed to building friendship between the peoples of China and the West.\n\nSACU is grateful for the support and sponsorship of Peking University for the Essay Competition. \nThis event will be held by Zoom – the link was sent out to members in the June newsletter and a reminder will be sent three days before the event.

Stephen Platt\, an American historian\, sets out both the British and the Chinese sides as events moved inexorably to war. DESCRIPTION:SACU’s AGM Saturday takes place in the morning of 20th July 2019 at St Columba’s Church\, Pont Street in Knightsbridge: \nSchedule for the day: \n11.30am – 1.00pm: SACU AGM in the Library \n11.30am -1.00pm: The Meridian Society (TMS) AGM in the Kirk Session Room \n1.00pm – 2.00pm: Lunch (‘Bring Your Own Lunch’).
