Evening dinner at 8.00pm for the delegation and SACU friends at the President Hotel\, 56-60 Guilford Street\, London WC1 1DB \nSaturday 29th September: afternoon visit to Oxford then on to Heathrow for flight back to Beijing \n  \nThis will be a great opportunity to meet ICCIC members who have exceptional experience in organising self-help activities and training in cooperative business in the poorer rural areas of China. DESCRIPTION:SACU Vice President Frances Wood will give an illustrated lecture on some outstanding works of Chinese literature\, drawing from her new book\, Great Books of China\, which ranges from The Book of Songs\, compiled over 2\,500 years ago through to late-twentieth-century novels. \n  \nFrances Wood is a distinguished historian of China and Chinese culture. She was head of the Chinese collections at the British Library until 2013. Rao Pingru was a 26-year-old soldier when he first saw the beautiful Mao Meitang. One glimpse of her through a window as she put on lipstick was enough to capture Pingru’s heart. SUMMARY:Liverpool Commemorates the Chinese Labour Corps
DESCRIPTION:As the centenary commemorations of World War I draw to a close this year\, Liverpool remembers the contribution of the Chinese Labour Corps\, almost a hundred thousand men from China who joined the Allied effort by providing logistical help at the Front. \nJoin these commemorations in Liverpool organised by The Meridian Society\, our affiliated society. \n  \n  \n \nThe Meridian Society aims to raise awareness of the story of the Chinese Labour Corps (CLC) nationwide through its project activities (supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund).  Local residents and visitors from elsewhere are invited to join the commemoration in Liverpool on the occasion of the centenary of the last Chinese labourer buried at Anfield who died on 9th August 1918. \nA day of remembrance in honour of the Chinese Labour Corps will take place in collaboration with the Museum of Liverpool and Friends of Anfield Cemetery on Friday 10th August (details below). \nA Family Activities Day will be held at the Museum of Liverpool on Saturday 11th August\, at which members of the general public will be able to hear a talk on the Chinese Labour Corps and attend film screenings\, or learn about the experiences of Chinese labourers by taking part in workshops on story-telling and Chinese arts and crafts. A number of Chinese Labour Corps artefacts will be on display and the museum will provide World War I objects for handling. \nA photographic exhibition on the Chinese Labour Corps from the W J Hawkings Collection\, courtesy of his grandson John de Lucy\, and kindly prepared by The Oriental Museum of Durham University\, is currently on display at The Black-E\, 1 Great George Street\, L1 5EW. Entitled ‘A Noble Duty Bravely Done – The Chinese Labour Corps in World War I’\, the exhibition will run until 18th August 2018. \n  \n \nRemembering the CLC at Liverpool on Friday 10th August \nCommemorative service\nTime 1.30 – 2.30 pm\nVenue:  Anfield Cemetery\, 238 Priory Road L4 2SL\nA commemoration in remembrance of the members of the Chinese Labour Corps who died in Liverpool to be held at their graveside in the Cemetery. SACU members are welcome to attend SACU’s  morning AGM or just come along for the afternoon presentation. \nThe provisional programme for the afternoon: \n\n2.00 – 2.30 Registration – tea / coffee and biscuits\n2.30 – 3.30 Tour of Shandong Province – Walter Fung\n3.30 – 4.30 Wushu – Tomasso Gianni\n4.30 – 5.00 Networking – close\n\nThis is a free event but please book your place by emailing The Meridian SocietySociety \n  \nThe Meridian Society’s Tour of Shandong was inspired by the centenary of the Chinese Labour Corps (CLC) most of whom came from Shandong which was occupied by European countries for many years\, a legacy still visible in buildings. The visit enabled the tour to meet the descendants of the CLC\, the birthplace of Confucius and its most sacred mountains and coastline. \nWushu was developed in an effort to standardise the practice of traditional Chinese martial arts. Competitive Wushu is composed of two disciplines: Taolu and Sanda. \nTaolu forms comprise basic movements (stances\, kicks\, punches\, balances\, jumps\, sweeps and throws) based on traditional Chinese martial art styles. \nSanda has all the combat aspects of wushu combining kicks\, boxing and wrestling.

From flourishing trade in the seventeenth century to today’s design choices\, there is a global demand for Chinese art and design. SUMMARY:"Youth" Film Screening at China Exchange - with ticket discounts for SACU members
DESCRIPTION:Experience one of the most talked about films released in China last year in a sociable atmosphere at China Exchange. Youth 芳华 directed by Feng Xiaogang and adapted from Yan Geling’s novel of the same name\, shares the lives of a group of idealistic adolescents in a military art troupe in the People’s Liberation Army during the 1970s. Set at one of the most crucial and controversial periods in contemporary China and starring Xuan Huang (Feng Liu)\, Miao Miao (Xiaoping He)\, Caiyu Yang (Dingding Lin)\, Elane Zhong (Suizi)\, the film  provides a glimpse into historic moments in mainland China\, and also recalls the bittersweet memories of youth.\n\nYouth was screened in the Special Presentations section at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival and won the Best Film Award at the 12th Asian Film Awards. DESCRIPTION: – SACU ChinaCafe 2018 Series – \n \nThis is an opportunity for SACU members\, OLD AND NEW\, to get to know one another and learn about SACU’s early days from an informal slideshow followed by a trip to the bar for a drink or two! \nSACU was founded in 1965 by Joseph Needham and others and in those days one of the very few ways that people from Britain could visit China was to join a SACU organised tour. The 1971 Tour was documented by Richard and Sally Greenhill\, professional photographers\, and we are delighted that Sally has agreed to come and show us some of the photos she took at the time. DESCRIPTION:Artists around the world and across the ages have drawn on literature as inspiration\, re-telling narratives through painting\, calligraphy and objects. Chinese artistic tradition often integrates painting and calligraphy within the same surface\, combining visual and verbal traditions of storytelling. Yet for those unfamiliar with China’s expansive literary traditions\, the tales told in Chinese painting can be inaccessible. \nJoin art expert Dr Malcolm McNeill\, as he unpicks this complex tapestry of words and images. In this talk\, Malcolm will help you ‘read’ Chinese art\, introduce the most popular tales told in Chinese painting\, and explore how visual narratives continue to contribute to Chinese literature into the modern period. \nDr McNeill is Chinese Paintings Specialist at Christie’s. Malcolm was formerly an Assistant Curator in the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Asia Department\, and a researcher on the British Museum exhibition ‘Ming: 50 Years that Changed China’. DESCRIPTION:Known as China’s Tolkien\, Jin Yong 金庸 is a house-hold name throughout East Asia\, with his fantasy epics selling over 300 million copies. Yet his works have remained a mystery in the West. Now a new English translation is opening up the legend for English-speaking readers. Meet young translator Anna Holmwood to hear how she “translated the untranslatable” in this event celebrating Jin Yong’s life and works at China Exchange on 17 March. \nBook now for a chance to win a copy of the new English translation of the Legend of The Condor Heroes at the event – the top three questions asked during the audience Q&A will win a book. \nAbout the speakers \nAnna Holmwood \nAnna\, who is now based in Sweden\, studied Chinese at Oxford University before discovering Jin Yong’s works in Taipei and moving to Hangzhou in China while she worked on the translation. She said the experience had made a “disciple” of her and Jin Yong her “shifu”. “It has been an intense and exhilarating experience to see the attention the English edition is getting after so many years sitting alone at my computer and grappling with every word and sentence\,” she said. “I approach the whole project with a humble heart; I have learned so much over the course of these years that I should say that Jin Yong is my shifu\, and I am his xuemei\, his disciple.” \nSoo Cole \nSoo is the co-founder and director of Fighting Spirit Film Festival which is now in its third year. It focuses on supporting\, promoting\, inspiring\, connecting\, and recognising those involved with martial arts and action films. She currently trains in Shaolin martial arts. \nDr Xiaoning Lu \nDr Xiaoning Lu is Lecturer in Modern Chinese Culture and Language at SOAS\, University of London. She received her master’s degree in modern Chinese literature from Fudan University\, China and PhD in comparative literature from Stony Brook University\, USA. As a scholar of literature as well as film\, she has published articles on modern Chinese literature\, Chinese cinema and socialist culture. \nHi Ching \nHi Ching was born in London and brought up in Singapore. He studied at the Royal Ballet School and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama\, and went on to dance with the Frankfurt Ballet\, Royal Opera\, and English National Opera. He then worked as a professional actor\,  appearing on TV\, film and stage before turning to directing\, producing\, writing and composing.
