SUMMARY:Multi-Dimensional China: Where Steel Forests Meet Red Earth (part of the China in Context Festival)
DESCRIPTION:In this discussion\, two renowned translators will unveil two different faces of China: urban and rural. \nWhist city residents witnessed drastic urban developments and gentrification movements\, with both excitement and confusion\, migrant workers from rural areas carried each brick on their backs and moved forward with struggles and reflections. \nHow has life changed in China’s cities and countryside throughout the decades? How did China’s urban and rural stories confront\, interlink and integrate? Join China Exchange to find out! \nAbout the speakers: \n\nNicky Harman\n\nNicky is a prolific Chinese to English translator and co-chair of the Translators Association (Society of Authors). Her most recent work\, the translation of Jia Pingwa’s novel Happy Dreams\, depicts life in industrializing contemporary China as seen through the eyes of Happy Liu\, a charming and clever rural labourer who leaves his home for the gritty harsh streets of Xi’an in search of better life. \n\nMichelle Deeter\n\nMichelle has been a Chinese to English translator and interpreter since 2007. Together with Nicky Harman\, she translated Paper Tiger\, which paints a portrait of the world’s second-largest economy via a thoughtful and wide-ranging series of mini essays on contemporary Chinese society. Her other works include Feng Tang’s Beijing\, Beijing and Chen Zijin’s The Untouched Crime\, which reveals the life in modern China through a variety of perspectives. \nChina in Context is organised by China Exchange and Cypress Books. \nPlease check the event website for details of ticket types\, prices and booking fees.

SUMMARY:Commemoration Ceremony to Honour the Chinese Labour Corps in Folkestone
DESCRIPTION:During World War I\, almost 100\,000 Chinese labourers were recruited by the British Army to provide logistical help at the Front. The majority passed through Folkestone on their way to mainland Europe and many stayed over for one night in a camp at the foot of the Downs. A steady number of around 2\,000 were kept in the town to carry out manual labour at Shorncliffe Army Camp and the surrounding area.\nSix members of the Chinese Labour Corps are buried at Shorncliffe Military Cemetery mostly victims of the Spanish ’flu or tuberculosis. It is unlikely that their descendants know of the existence of these graves.  Therefore in remembrance of them and their compatriots who served at the Front a commemoration service will be held in this final year of the centenary of the Great War. \nThe ceremony\, co-hosted by The Meridian Society and Shorncliffe Station\, will be held at Shorncliffe Military Cemetery and will be attended by the Mayor of Folkestone and other dignitaries\, local societies and school students together with a number of descendants whose ancestors served as officers of the Chinese Labour Corps. If you or your group would like to lay a wreath please advise The Meridian Society in advance so that they can allocate a space and time-slot. \nAfter the ceremony all those attending are invited to light refreshments at the Sergeants’ Mess in Sir John Moore Barracks. \nRSVP by Sunday 11th March if you will be joining the ceremony.

SUMMARY:Happiness and Health in Chinese Propaganda Posters
DESCRIPTION:Access rarely seen posters from the Archives of the University of Westminster and learn about happiness and health in China under high socialism. Meet the Archivists who will be on hand to talk about the work\, and learn about research on Chinese conceptions of happiness and Chinese migrants’ mental health conducted in Soho.\nLed by Anna McNally\, Senior Archivist at the University of Westminster\, Gerda Wielander\, Reader in Chinese Studies and Cangbai Wang and Derek Hird\, both Senior Lecturers in Chinese Studies\, in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures. \nThe event forms part of the University’s Difference Festival. \n“Although some of our posters have been exhibited before\, attention has often focussed on the representation of the Cultural Revolution within the collection. We are hoping to use this event as an opportunity to look at some of the lesser-known aspects of the collection and to present a broader picture of Chinese society in the 20th century. My colleagues will also be discussing some of their recent research with Chinese migrants in London.” Anna McNally\, Senior Archivist at the University of Westminster.

SUMMARY:Researching the Chinese Labour Corps: Talk by Brian Fawcett
DESCRIPTION:Researching the Chinese Labour Corps: How it started and what I found \nSpeaker Brian Fawcett worked in the Far East for many years and was an active member of the Royal Asiatic Society.  It was at the request of the RAS that he\, with the help of his wife Claudine\, began a period of in-depth research into what was then\, and to a large extent still is\, a relatively unknown story.  Brian’s findings were published in the journal of the Hong Kong branch of the RAS and have been an important resource for subsequent researchers. \nThis free talk is part of a series of events at Folkestone Museum \nFolkestone Museum and The Meridian Society’s Chinese Labour Corps Heritage project (funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund) are organising this talk as part of their series of events and activities to help raise awareness within the community of the largely untold story of the CLC and the involvement of the town in their history.

SUMMARY:China Media Centre 2017 Autumn Seminar - The prevalence and increasing significance of Guanxi
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This forthcoming paper in The China Quarterly provides an analytical review of the social science literature on guanxi. The focus of this review is on the prevalence and the increasing significance of guanxi during China’s post-1978 reforms implemented to move to a market economy. Since then\, researchers have engaged in debates on what guanxi actually means to Chinese people in the past and at present\, how it has been adaptive to ongoing institutional transformations\, and why its influence in economic\, social\, and political spheres can be stabling\, increasing\, or decreasing along with market reforms and economic growth. The author provides a synthesis of these debates before offering a theoretical framework within which to understand the dynamics of guanxi from the changing degrees of institutional uncertainty and market competition. Survey findings on the increases of guanxi usage in labour markets from 1978 to 2009 are presented to illustrate the usefulness of this framework. In the conclusion\, the author argues that guanxi is a five-level variable\, and that the nature and forms of guanxi influence are contingent upon on whether guanxi is a tie of connectivity\, a sentimental tie\, a sentiment-derived instrumental tie\, an instrumental-particular tie\, or an obligational tie that facilitates power-money exchanges. This five-level conceptualization is aimed at advancing future guanxi scholarship in the fast-changing Chinese society. \nBiography: Bian Yanjie is Professor of Sociology at University of Minnesota\, USA. Concurrently\, he is Director of the Institute for Empirical Social Science Research at Xi’an Jiaotong University\, China. Dr. Bian is a co-founder (with Professor Li Lulu) of the Chinese General Social Survey\, which is a public data archive available to domestic and international scholars. Author of 13 books and more than 130 research articles on topics of China’s social stratification\, social networks\, and institutional change\, Dr. Bian’s current projects include the development of the sociology of guanxi\, a panel study about networks and jobs in Chinese cities\, and East Asian social networks. He was recognized as one of the 2014\, 2015\, and 2016 Elsevier most-cited Chinese researchers in social science. \nNotes: This is also one of the Global China Media Seminar Series (GCMSS)\, co-organised with Global China Institute.
