SUMMARY:Anglo-Chinese Relations in an Upended World
DESCRIPTION:Anglo-Chinese Relations in an Upended World: Free online talk for SACU by Andrew K P Leung\, SBS\, FRSA \nIntroduction: The liberal\, value-and rules-based world order led by the United States since the end of the Second World War has now been upended by President Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) rules-of-the-jungle iconoclasm\, rattling relations with the entire world\, traditional allies not exempted. Many nations including EU Member States are recalibrating relationships with other regions and nations with growth potential\, especially China\, as the world’s second largest economy\, ideological and other risks regardless. As home to Adam Smith and the world’s leading proponent of free (and fair) trade\, the United Kingdom is well poised to re-examine and re-explore opportunities for more fruitful relations with a changing China\, including Hong Kong. \nShort Bio: Andrew K P Leung\, SBS\, FRSA\, International and Independent China Strategist with decades of experience and insight on China’s development\, including as Hong Kong’s chief representative for the UK and eastern Europe\, Russia\, Switzerland\, Norway and EU applicant countries. \nSee more about Andrew Leung on his website here \nPlease reserve your place on Eventbrite here

SUMMARY:How to Entertain: A Confucian Guide to Being the Host or Guest
DESCRIPTION:How to Entertain: A Confucian Guide to Being the Host or Guest – Lecture for SACU \nThe essence of propriety is to “be humble and respect others\,” according to the Chinese classic on ritual. This dual sentiment is manifestly lived out in the interaction between host and guest\, which can range from a casual visit to a friend to meeting parents-in-law for the first time. Through various situations\, we examine how Confucian thought esteems adaptability to the context in these complementary roles. \nThis lecture is one of a series: \nA Practical Guide for Every Day – The Art of Living from The Confucian Tradition \nSeries two – Making Friends and Entertaining (Series two\, May – July 2025) \nLecture 6. How to Entertain: A Confucian Guide to Being the Host or Guest (17 July 2025) \nConfucius lived over 2000 years ago\, yet his influence remains very strong in China. During the Han dynasty\, ‘Confucianism’ was adopted as the underlying ideology for imperial rule and family order. Throughout China’s history\, Confucianism has been challenged\, reinterpreted\, and appropriated. From the 20th century\, after a period of disfavour\, politicians and educationalists in China are once again turning to Confucianism for guidance. \nThis event is free but registration is required. Please book on Eventbrite here. \nTo understand what Confucianism is\, SACU is pleased that experts Dr Katherine Ngo and Dr Kelly Ngo\, from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David\, will be running a series of seminars for us in 2025\, our 60th year. \n\n \n \n \n \n Dr Katherine Ngo\n \n \n \n \n \n Dr Kelly Ngo\n \n \n\n  \nThis event is free but registration is required. Please book on Eventbrite here. \nFull Programme of the Seminar Series here \nThe seminar series will run monthly on the third Thursday of each month at 7.00-8.00pm UK time (with a month’s break between each series). Just before each seminar\, a Zoom meeting link will be sent to those that have registered via Eventbrite. \nThese seminars are open at all. Attendees are invited to join SACU here \nPhoto credits: Dr Katherine Ngo & Dr Kelly Ngo
