SACU Members ChinaChat: Discussing the Opium Wars

Dr Jenny Clegg, SACU Vice President, will share her thoughts based on Stephen Platt’s Imperial Twilight: The Opium War and the End of China’s Last Golden Age (2018).

This is a chance for us as SACU members to meet together and share our ideas and thoughts.

Please be sure to use the Updated Link to the meeting – it has been emailed to all members
[the original one included in our earlier newsletter on 16th June will not work]

With the first salvos of the first Opium War in 1839, Britain opened China to a ‘century of humiliation’. Stephen Platt, an American historian, sets out both the British and the Chinese sides as events moved inexorably to war. This potent turning point in China’s history ‘stands for everything that today’s China seeks to put behind it’, giving Platt’s narrative ‘important implications for today’s uncertain and ever-changing world’.

To launch SACU ChinaChats into the virtual dimension, Jenny will share her thoughts and impressions of the book with a view to stimulating discussion on this defining moment in Anglo-Chinese history, and to enabling the sharing of views between our British and Chinese members in an informal and relaxed setting.

This free event is for SACU members only.

Zoom codes have been sent to SACU members. [Please use the Updated Link sent by email to members on Monday 22 June 2020 [the one included in our earlier email won’t work].
